Holidays and sustainability

I wonder how many of us think there is a connection between holidays and being environmentally friendly. Maybe some have some idea on how much of CO2 is being emitted while flying or driving to your favorite holiday destination. Unfortunateley ‘tourism pollution’ is not limited only at CO2 emissions. When we travel we need to take into account also disposed waste even if ( most of it) is plastic or compostable, even if we are camping or renting a holiday accommodation.  Its good to remember to have some bin bags  with you to collect your waste while camping or even having a picnic. You need to consider also if  there are  selective collection bins. Also be mindful with toxic and plastic waste in natural water bodies when traveling.  These can have a major impact on local flora and fauna and overall on the entire national and global ecosystem.

Did you know…

Travelling by air can be replaced with  travelling by train. You can select a different route, find cheaper fares and see beautiful landscape.

Let’s take for example London-Paris, a very popular turistique route. You can opt out for a train route. CO2 emissions is 10,6 kg CO2  per passenger. Flight to Paris from London, econ has emissions of 110 kg CO2 per passenger, so that is  10 times more. Travelling by car ( petrol engine, average % L/km)  London to Paris ( taking the ferry from Dover to Calais) has emissions of 173 kg CO2 pe vehicle.

Maybe this example will give you something to think when planning your next travel destination.

As and end note, we would like to tell you that Swaparoo http://www.swaparoo.ro/blogloves Circular Economy. The principle of Circular economy encourages reuse of general consumer goods .  Swaparoo encourages CO2 emissions by extending products life cycles and encourages multiple use of items. https://swaparoo.ie/about-us-and-how-swaparoo-came-to-life/
